The Canal Museum at The BoilerHouse at Foxton Locks, tells the story of the Lift, Locks and People associated with the canals radiating from Foxton. The BoilerHouse sits at the Middle Lock of the famous staircase of locks. It is the rebuilt boiler house of the Victorian Inclined Plane Boat lift, which is the centre of our operations. The Museum is run the Foxton Inclined Plane Trust; we work closely with the Canal and River Trust to promote Foxton and its history.
The Museum was recently refurbished and upgraded using an arts council grant. International Holovis did the work and provided animated films and a unique boiler game where you have to stoke the boiler to activate a film of the lift. A big favourite with younger visitors is our narrowboat cabin. Working models and hundreds of artefacts make this an enjoyable and educational visit. We have won various awards.
We have a wide range of volunteering opportunities, from front of house in the museum to being one of our trustees. We also need practical people to help with maintenance. Where necessary we do provide training, young or mature there is something you could help with. Please give us a call and think about joining our friendly team.
