The areas of Eastwell, Eaton, Branston and Goadby Marwood saw extensive ironstone quarrying from 1881 until 1967, involving six completely independent ironstone quarry systems. For many years these quarries vied with agriculture as the main employers in this rural location near Melton Mowbray.
Eastwell Heritage Centre is intended to tell the story of this ironstone quarrying heritage, as well as a section devoted to our local agricultural heritage. The ex. Eastwell Quarries locomotive ‘Lord Granby’, restored over a ten-year period, is accompanied by the only surviving ore wagon from the tramway.
Research into the local ironstone history has also been undertaken, and it is intended to present this at the centre as development progresses. Occasional open days are held.
